Early this year a member of my favorite band, the Mammals, had a baby, William Puck Merenda. When I found out Ruthy was pregnant I offered to knit her a baby blanket as I do this for all of my friends when they give me enough notice. I do it even when they do not give me notice, but they have to accept that the baby may come some time before the blanket in that case. This was one of those designs that flowed from my brain to the needles in an endless stream of fascination. The squares are deliberately knit in multidirections to interest the baby as it (he) gets older. I asked Ruthy for her favorite color and she said green. I find it interesting that the colors match this color scheme from this summer, even though it was knit a year earlier.
My first ever self design. Lace patterns that mirror on the left and right of a center lace diamond pattern. All patterns were from Barbara Walker’s Treasury of Knitting Patterns. I included a Cat’s Paw pattern because it seemed appropriate – even before I started blogging, the “Cat” appellation was mine.
I wanted to practice steeking before using it in a project where it mattered. This scarf knitted in the round was the solution. If I were to re do it I would knit just one strand of yarn at a time. With two strands, the scarf was to stiff to wear!
After discovering modular knitting and mitred squares I played around with making different types of mitre – some with more than one mitre. I tried two, three, four and finally five mitres at a time and realized that the last made a pentagon. By adding pentagons to each side an interesting five sided fabric was created. I backed these pentagons by knitting a back that was a pentagon which started in the middle and was knitted outwards. The bag was finished by adding a pentagon shaped flap and an i-cord strap.
am looking for a swirled pentagon pattern to make a small ball. can you help? thanks. hilary

I’m not sure how you would take the pentagon and make a ball but the back of my 5-point star bag is a pentagon knitted from the middle. You could start with that.
The 5 point star bag is a new pattern for me, I would probably start knitting again this weekend. Thanks.
Let me know if you have any questions. It is a quick knit.
