Zen Quote for August

The most important thing is, only do it.  When you only do something 100 percent, then there is no subject, no object.  There is no inside or outside.  Inside and outside already become one.  That means you and the universe are never separate.  There is no thinking.

Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of nonessentials.

Lin Yutang

Having no plates to eat from, moves washing up from a nonessential to an essential, unfortunately.

Zen Quote

I have a Zen-a-day calendar again this year and will regal you with my favorite quotes per month.

My top favorite, which I would do well to remember, is a Zen saying:

Open your mouth and you’re wrong.

Close behind are quotes from Leonardo da Vinci, Oscar Wilde, and Seng-Ts’an. These quotes seem to share a common theme.

From da Vinci:

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

From Wilde:

Seriousness is the only refuge of the shallow.

From Seng-Ts’an:

The more talking and thinking, the farther from the truth.

And finally, the last word goes to Thomas Wolfe:

Which of us is not forever a stranger and alone.

Quotes from Dalai Lama

Filed under: Zen — Tags: — Cat @ 10:10 pm

I don’t know when I last posted a quote from my Dalai Lama calendar so here are three from the last three months:

November:

Sleep is the best meditation

So I’ve been meditating all day.

October:

I love friends.  I want more friends.  I love smiles.  That is a fact.  How to develop smiles? There are a variety of smiles.  Some smiles are sarcastic.  Some are artificial - diplomatic smiles.  These smiles do not produce satisfaction, but rather fear or suspicion.  But a genuine smile gives us hope. freshness.

September:

The ideas and activities of even a single individual can have far-reaching benefits for millions of people and other living creatures.

The Dalai Lama says:

Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if we can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.

Dalai Lama Quote from July 2007

Filed under: Zen — Cat @ 8:50 pm

It is no longer adequate to adopt the view that our responsibility as a society is to simply further scientific knowledge and enhance technological power and that the choice of what to do with this knowledge and power should be left in the hands of the individual.

For as long as space endures,

And for as long as living beings remain,

Uuntil then may I, too, abide to dispel the misery of the world
